Bringing the finest wine, food and style to life in Soweto

SOWETO, 2 SEPTEMBER 2015 – Entrepreneurs and SMME's are the backbone of South Africa and no more is this prevalent than at the 11th Soweto Wine & Lifestyle Festival, happening from 4 – 6 September 2015 at the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, Kliptown, Soweto.

Celebrating hard work, ingenuity and conviction, this year’s festival will be a showcase of those who drive South Africa's economy and creativity from Soweto to the Cape.

Says Mnikelo Mangciphu, festival co-owner and owner of Morara Wine & Spirit Emporium, Soweto’s first wine shop, “If you want to understand the power of creative collaboration, then be at the 11th Soweto Wine & Lifestyle‬ and meet the people driving the energy in Africa's hottest destination – Soweto.

This year we are celebrating SMMEs and entrepreneurs from Soweto to the Cape, the driving force of economic development in South Africa, and the vibrant, creative minds that are making home-grown magic happen. I am referring to the magnificent wine estates this year as well as the lifestyle exhibitors.

Exclusive boutique wineries

Approximately 40 of South Africas top boutique wineries will be travelling from the Cape to Soweto to showcase South Africas most exclusive fine wines, giving Gauteng locals the rare, hands-on opportunity to discover varieties cultivated with precision by the countrys most acclaimed wine brands, including Hartenberg Estate, Haute Cabrire, Meerlust, Boekenhoutskloofs Chocolate Block, Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons and Sijnn Winery, to name a few. Click here to view them all.

For foodies, the festivals tantalising Soweto Street Food Experience, in collaboration with Gauteng Tourism, will showcase Gautengs SMME cuisine creators, including Vilakazi Streets renowned Sakhumzi and Roots restaurants, plus eclectic pop-up restaurants serving Soweto-inspired cuisine and gourmet burgers, to delectable cupcakes, artisan coffee and even an oyster and sushi bar.

Vuyo's Food Truck is one of the festival's food exhibitors with a story that epitomises South African entrepreneurs' big, bold spirit. Owner, Miles Kubheka, was inspired to bring Vuyo, the fictional character who went from rags to riches in Hansa Pilsener's iconic advert - "Ooh Vuyo, hes such a beeg dreamer!" to life.

This year, the festival has gone all out showcasing the lifestyle element associated to wine and its inspirational path to fun, faith, creativity and precision, attributes often linked to the great brands and products of our time. Everyone and everything starts somewhere so selecting the brightest of Joburgs creative talent through Sowetos LoCrate Market seemed inevitable.

The festival will be platforming designer accessories by David Tshabalala; one-of-a-kind bicycles from Fixin Diaries; rebellious fashion from Dung Beetle Apparel; urban African streetwear from Hectic 7 Creations, and the infamous street wear brand, Thesis Lifestyle.

Also included are Originally Kasified Clothing, the durable gear brand from Soweto established in 2013, by three creative gentlemen, Muzi Mabena, Itumeleng Boroko, and Loyiso Nxumalo.

We also have bold, vibrant African-inspired clothing by the talented Soweto designer, Bathini Kowane, and retro treasures from Tickle your Vintage, so bring your wallet and you wont want to go home empty-handed.

On the music and entertainment front, talented Soweto-born bands that will be performing at the festival include Urban Village, jazz drummer extraordinaire Tumi Mogorosi, FangDaRhthym & Edsoul, and the eclectic DJ Doda.

Interestingly, Urban Village are a group of young, self-taught and experiential artists founded by Orlando West local and lead guitarist, Lerato Lichaba, and sensational vocalist Tubatsi Mpho Moloi.

The Urban Village sound is described as South African indie folk music layered with electric, funky acoustic melodies blended with traditional influences. This band has performed at festivals from across the world and you will be hearing them live at the 11th Soweto Wine & Lifestyle Festival.

If this doesnt leave you breathless in Soweto, you are beyond help!
