Fairtrade Fortnight: Change the World one sip at a time

Fairtrade Fortnight is a new initiative running from 30 March to 12 April 2015 that aims to inspire South Africans to change the world for the better by choosing products and services that are certified by Fairtrade’s ethical / sustainable label.

Says Fairtrade South Africa, the organisation behind the campaign, “We can not contain the excitement in the Fairtrade offices! We're ready to launch FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2015! It's all about THE POWER OF YOU!

“We're asking South Africans to seek justice with a chocolate bar, right wrongs with a glass of wine, change the world on their coffee break, or sweeten bitter trade on their way to gym, while possibly winning incredible prizes along the way. Stay tuned!”

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade stands for changing the way trade works - through fair prices, better working conditions and a more sustainable way of farming - to offer a more stable future for farming communities across the world.

The FAIRTRADE Mark is the most widely recognised and trusted ethical label in the world.

When a product carries the FAIRTRADE Mark, it means that the whole supply chain is certified against the relevant Fairtrade Standards and is audited annually to ensure compliance.

South Africa's Fairtrade wines

South Africa is ranked as the world's largest producer of Fairtrade wines. In 2013, two-thirds of the 20.8 million litres of Fairtrade wines sold globally were produced in this country.

Currently, South Africa has 28 certified wine grape producers. These producers extend over 68 farms and employ over 2,500 farm workers. For each bottle of Fairtrade wine sold, 70 cents of the retail price goes back to the farm workers.
